Most Iranian email hosting providers won't let you use your own custom domain — either they restrict you to a subdomain, or they only unlock it on expensive enterprise plans. If you want to send mail from [email protected], that usually means going to Google or Microsoft, or running your own server.
Why the restriction exists
It's not a technical limitation, it's an economic and risk-driven one. When a host serves thousands of customers off a shared pool of IPs, every new domain is a new reputation to manage. One customer sending spam, or one domain landing on a blocklist, can hurt the whole IP block. Limiting domains to the host's own subdomains, or charging more for a custom one, is a simple way to push that risk onto the enterprise customers who are usually willing to pay for it.
The usual options organizations end up with
There are three common paths. First, the enterprise plan from the same Iranian host — it usually works, but pricing scales with seats and you don't get much control over SPF/DKIM, routing rules, or archiving. Second, Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 — technically solid, but for many Iranian organizations payment and access are real obstacles, and the data sits on infrastructure outside their control. Third, self-hosted email — your server, your domain, no artificial restriction.
Where self-hosting actually pays off
Self-hosting isn't for everyone — if you don't have technical staff or your user count is tiny, the maintenance overhead probably outweighs the benefit. But for organizations with a few hundred to a few thousand mailboxes (a university, a holding company, a business running multiple brands), the math flips: you keep the full custom domain, the data stays on your own infrastructure, and total cost usually ends up lower than international enterprise plans. That's exactly what we saw on a 10,000-mailbox university migration — costs dropped roughly 90% without losing the domain or control.
