About PotatoPepDB
PotatoPepDB is a specialized bioinformatics platform designed as a centralized repository and analytical engine for Antimicrobial Peptides (AMPs) derived from Solanum tuberosum (potato).
The Challenge
With the rising threat of antibiotic-resistant pathogens in agriculture, identifying natural plant-based defense molecules has become critical for developing sustainable agricultural solutions.
Our Solution
We developed a comprehensive web application that enables researchers to:
- Search & Discover: Find antimicrobial peptides using simple text queries or build complex logical filters with advanced search capabilities
- BLAST Analysis: Perform sequence similarity searches against the peptide database
- Peptide Calculator: Predict antimicrobial potential using advanced physicochemical metrics including molecular weight, isoelectric point, GRAVY, net charge, Boman index, and more
- Statistics Dashboard: View comprehensive database statistics and peptide distributions
- 3D Visualization: Interactive molecular structure viewing for peptide analysis
Technical Implementation
The platform was built using modern web technologies:
- Frontend: React with TypeScript, Tailwind CSS for responsive design
- Backend: FastAPI (Python) for high-performance API
- Database: MongoDB for flexible peptide data storage
- Deployment: Docker containerization with Traefik reverse proxy
Impact
PotatoPepDB facilitates the development of next-generation bio-pesticides and transgenic crops with enhanced resistance, contributing to sustainable agriculture practices.
