A welder's qualification and a weld's inspection result usually live in different filing cabinets

Steel fabrication quality control genuinely depends on three things staying linked: which procedure (WPS) was qualified for this joint, which welder (WPQ) was certified to run that procedure, and what the NDT or coating inspection actually found afterward. In practice, these three records are often kept by three different people in three different formats, and reconstructing the link between them after the fact — during an audit, or after a failure — is where real time gets lost.

What breaks when a nonconformance is found

  • Tracing back to root cause is manual. Which welder, which procedure, which heat number — pulling that thread across paper records or disconnected spreadsheets takes hours that a live system takes seconds for.
  • NCR/CAPA follow-through gets lost. A nonconformance gets logged, a corrective action gets promised, and six months later nobody can confirm the CAPA was actually closed out — or even find the original record.
  • The manufacturing record book (MRB) becomes a scramble at handover time instead of a document that already exists.
